Colorado Elopement Packing List
After 7 years of planning Colorado mountain elopements, I've seen it all — brides in flip flops on icy trails, grooms without jackets at 12,000 feet, and more forgotten marriage licenses than I can count. Whether you're eloping at Rocky Mountain National Park, Sapphire Point, Garden of the Gods, or a private venue near Estes Park, packing the right gear makes your day so much smoother. Colorado weather is no joke — sunshine to sideways snow in an hour — and altitude catches everyone off guard. This is the packing list I send every couple.

Everything You Need to Pack for the Perfect Colorado Elopement
1. Clothing & Accessories
Start with the essentials – think about what you will wear! While you might not want to bring any extra layers into those beautiful photos, having a jacket or a sweater on hand can be a lifesaver, especially if it gets chilly.
Some couples avoid extra clothing because they believe it will make the photo session more difficult, and they do not see it as convenient. However, you can always put it on between shots or before and after the ceremony. It does not mean you will have it in your shots. Do not forget that comfort is key, so you need to make sure you have everything to achieve being comfortable during your big day
Spring
Spring is sunshine-meets-surprise-storms. Trails can be muddy and windy.
Waterproof shell (lightweight, truly waterproof)
Microspikes or grippy soles (early spring can be icy)
Quick-dry socks and an extra pair
Compact umbrella (for windless sprinkles, otherwise skip)
Warm base layer for under outfits
Hand warmers for dawn ceremonies
Style note: Flowing fabrics look gorgeous in wind—just secure hems and bring veil clips.
Summer
Bright mornings, afternoon thunderstorms, and strong sun. Start early or go sunset.
Electrolytes and extra water (more than you think)
Wide-brim hat or veil weights
Breathable base layer (yes, under suits and dresses)
Bug wipes/spray (deet-free options travel well)
Light rain shell (storms move fast)
Cooling towel in a zip bag
Sunscreen stick for on-the-go reapplication
Fall
Glorious colors, crisp mornings, and temperature swings.
Packable puffer or wool wrap
Thermal tights/leggings under dresses
Touchscreen gloves
Beanie that doesn’t crush hair
Moisturizing balm for hands and lips
Extra layer for partner (someone always underestimates the chill)
Timing tip: Peak color can mean crowds. A warm layer = more private spots at sunrise.
Winter
Snow globe vibes. Cold fingers happen quickly—plan for cozy.
Insulated boots with wool socks (bring a dry backup pair)
Traction devices (microspikes)
Down jacket that still looks good in photos
Base layer top + bottom (merino is your friend)
Thin liner gloves under dressy gloves
Hand + toe warmers
Thermos with tea, cocoa, or broth
Anti-fog wipes for glasses/sunglasses
Breath hack: Short, slow breaths help with cold-induced coughs at altitude.
2. Snacks, Snacks, Snacks!
Wedding days can be super busy, and it is easy to forget to eat. You may try to stay fit for the big day and all that, but your elopement is not the day when you want to skip food. We are not saying you have to go for a big meal an hour before the elopement, but some snacks in your elopement packing list will surely come in handy.
So, make sure you pack some tasty snacks or your favorite protein bars. Keeping your energy up throughout the day is essential, so do not skip this step!
3. Hydration is Key
If you are eloping in Colorado, remember that the dry air can be deceptive. You might not notice how much fluid you are losing, so bring plenty of water to stay hydrated. Trust us, you will thank yourself later!
4. Little Stuff
Mini sewing kit (clear thread + safety pins = magic)
Stain-remover pen
Lint roller (black suits + dogs + pine needles)
First Aid Kit
Cash
Bobby Pins, Safety Pins, Etc.
Printed Day-of Timeline, Directions, & Vendor contact info
Lip Balm
5. Hair and Makeup Must-Haves
Do not forget to include hairspray, a mirror, and any other beauty essentials you might need in your elopement packing list. You want to look your best, right? So, you need to be prepared to make some corrections or freshen up in between shoots.
Even if you choose a professional stylist to take care of your look, having some must-haves at hand will be convenient. This is especially important if you are having your elopement outdoors. The weather can be unpredictable, and the elements can affect your look, meaning it is better to be prepared!
6. Proper Footwear + Extra Shoes
If your elopement is outside, consider bringing a pair of closed-toed shoes or hiking boots. If the terrain is muddy or icy, these will be a much better option than your fancy shoes. You can always switch into something nicer for the actual ceremony and your bridal photoshoot!
However, this is also a good idea even if your elopement is not in the open air. Sometimes, your bridal shoes might not be as comfy as you expect them to be, so having an extra pair will save you from a night of discomfort!
7. Fun Props
Want to add a little fun and excitement to your photographs? Bring along some fun props like a “we eloped” sign, no-mess confetti balls, or bubbles. They can make for some really cute and memorable shots!
9. Cell Phone Charger
Your phone will likely be buzzing with messages and calls on your big day. Bring a portable charger to keep your phone powered up for all those special moments and photos you will want to capture.
You will have a professional photographer to capture your big moments, but there will still be some points of your elopement you would like to capture yourself.
10. Marriage License, Vows, & Rings
Here are the three most important things you absolutely cannot forget in your elopement packing list - your marriage license, your vows, and your rings! Make sure these are safe and secure, as you will need them for the ceremony.
Most Forgotten Items for an Elopement
There are items that many couples usually forget to include in their elopement checklist. These might not be things that will prevent them from getting married, but are still features to make the day special and authentic. Here are some examples:
The Marriage License: couples forget the marriage license on their wedding day more than you’d think.
The Rings: this is an easy one to let slip, don’t forget these guys at home!
Vows (print out + backup on phone is best)
Tissues: Get ready for some happy tears! Having a tissue nearby can help avoid any makeup mishaps and also be a nice comfort when those emotional moments hit.
Most Importantly…
I've planned elopements at nearly every ceremony site in Colorado — RMNP's Sprague Lake in a snowstorm, Sapphire Point in 80-degree heat, Loveland Pass in 40 mph winds. Being prepared helps, but the couples who have the best days… are the ones who stay positive. I’ve seen couples stressed out on beautiful days, and couples laughing in the rain. It’s all up to you! Pack smart, layer up, and trust the process. And if you have questions about what to expect at your specific location, reach out — I've probably been there a hundred times.
